Toronto natives Geddy Lee, Alex Lifeson, and drummer John Rutsy incorporated as RUSH in 1968. Originally the power trio formed as a heavy metal act but shortly after their self-titled first album Neil Peart took over for the ailing Rutsy. The band was about to tour to Canada to promote the album when Rutsy fell ill. Peart auditioned and was immediately signed on. He had just returned from Europe where he did studio session work for Thin Lizzy. The tour went well; Peart proved to be a not just a highly skilled percussionist but a very fine lyricist as well. With the next few albums the band took a more progressive direction with complex, lengthy music backing songs of weighty, intellectually challenging subject matter. With very little advertising and in spite of being largely ignored by a sometimes hostile press the prog trio developed a large, fiercely loyal fan base including some successful contemporaries. RUSH is now widely regarded as one of the most accomplished and influential ensembles in rock history.
Neil, we miss you and your talent, intelligence, integrity and personal strength. Thank you for forty years of great, inspiring music and words. Rest in peace.
