Toronto natives Geddy Lee, Alex Lifeson, and drummer John Rutsy incorporated as RUSH in 1968. Originally the power trio formed as a heavy metal act but shortly after their first album Neil Peart replaced the ailing Rutsy and the band took off in a more progressive, cerebral direction. Another Toronto-ite, and like Lee and Lifeson, a high-school drop-out, Peart proved to be a highly skilled percussionist and very fine lyricist. After several subsequent albums, rigorously high quality music, lengthy, highly polished sets, and regular album releases the band slowly established themselves. Despite very little air-play, scant advertising and in spite being largely ignored by a sometimes hostile press the band slowly but surely developed a large, fiercely loyal fan base including some very successful contemporaries. With the announced retirement of Peart RUSH quietly disbanded after forty+ years but is now widely regarded as one of the most accomplished and influential ensembles in rock history.
Neil, we miss you and your talent, your intelligence, integrity and personal strength. Thank you for your inspiring music and words. Rest in peace.
